Garage Door Tips on Dents

Dented Garage Door: What Should You Do?

Before you call a garage door repair expert, first take a closer look at the damage, as you could fix the problem on your own without the help of a professional. However, this is only if the door is made of a certain material and the damage is not too great. Did you know that a shrink wrap gun can help with dents in a car door, so chances are it could help with a garage door? Check your materials first, as mentioned above.

Is the Damage Significant?

When your car has an accident, or you see minor repairs, what is the first thing that you would do? Take it to a mechanic or a repair shop to get it repaired properly. The same can be said with garage doors, as they too can suffer dents; some, however, are more serious than others.

What Material Is the Door Made Of?

Wood doors that are splintered or have been gouged will benefit from a professional’s touch. However, if the doors are stainless steel or aluminum, minor dents may be repaired using the proper tools, materials, and methods.

Aluminum Dent Repair

Aluminum is the easiest material to fix. First, get a sponge, a bucket of water, a dish soap, a lighter or heat lamp, some tin foil, and a can of compressed air. Fill the bucket with some warm water and add a drop of dish soap and stir. Clean the dented area to remove all the debris and grime.

Then, measure and cut a section of tinfoil and place it over the dent with some tape. Hold the heat lamp over the tinfoil for 60 seconds, so heat is transmitted to the dent. Remove the foil and immediately spray the condensed air over the area evenly. Due to the molecular structure of aluminum, the sudden change in temperature will often result in the dent reversing as the surface moves back into its original place.
